Primary Three students visited the historic island of Yim Tin Tsai on 11th March for their annual pilgrimage and ecological learning activity. Led by professional guides from the Yim Tin Tsai Heritage and Conservation Centre, the students explored this small island where Catholic heritage and natural beauty come together.
The guides introduced the history of Yim Tin Tsai, the villagers’ simple traditional way of life, and the island’s valuable natural ecology. There, the students learned about the patron saint, St. Joseph, and gained a deeper understanding of the hardships and contributions of Fr. Joseph Freinademetz in his early missionary work on the island. This helped the students appreciate the importance of Yim Tin Tsai as an early and significant center of Catholic missionary activity in Hong Kong. The students also prayed in front of the sculpture “When I Was Sick,” newly installed during last year’s Jubilee Year, expressing care and concern for the sick and the poor.
The “Yim Tin Tsai Pilgrimage” is a regular key activity for Primary Three students. It aims to echo the spirit of their grade’s patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi, who cared deeply for all creation, while also connecting with their religious studies curriculum. During the guided tour, students not only learned about ecological conservation, but also, through observation and reflection, came to appreciate God’s creation and began to cultivate a love for protecting nature.
